Can you text a HubSpot contact first, before they message you?

With SMS, yes, straight from the contact record. With Telegram and most chat apps, no, and the reason is the channel rules rather than the integration.

With SMS, yes. You can open a HubSpot contact record and send the first message without waiting for them to reach out. With Telegram, Instagram, and most chat apps, no. That limit comes from the platforms themselves, not from whatever tool you bolt on.

This trips people up constantly, because “messaging in the CRM” sounds like one feature. It’s really two, and only one of them lets you go first.

Reply-based channels versus SMS

Telegram, WhatsApp, and Instagram are reply-based by design. The customer has to open the conversation. Telegram in particular won’t let a bot or an account blast someone who has never written to it, and that rule exists specifically to stop the thing you might be hoping to do. Any vendor claiming they can cold-message Telegram contacts from your CRM is describing something the platform does not permit.

SMS has no such gate. A phone number is a phone number. If you have consent and a sending number, you can text someone who has never texted you. That single difference is why proactive outreach in HubSpot ends up being an SMS conversation almost every time.

What it looks like on the record

TryWired puts an SMS card on the HubSpot contact record. An admin adds it once through record customization, and after that anyone with access to the record can use it.

The rep opens a contact, types into the card, and sends. The message goes out through your connected Twilio number to the phone number on that contact. From there it behaves like any other conversation: it lands in the HubSpot inbox you picked for that channel, the reply arrives on the same thread, and the whole exchange logs as communication activity against the contact plus any companies and deals already associated with it.

The important part is that an outbound-first thread isn’t a special case. It’s the same thread object, the same logging, the same associations. Nobody has to remember which conversations started which way.

What you still have to handle

Consent is yours. TryWired doesn’t replace your opt-in process, and connecting a Twilio number doesn’t grant permission to text anyone in your database. Keep consent records wherever your team already keeps them.

Opt-outs live in Twilio. STOP handling, sender registration, and the rules for your countries and message types are configured on the Twilio side. That’s true of any Twilio-based integration, since Twilio is the one actually holding the carrier relationship.

Registration is not optional in the US. A2P 10DLC brand and campaign registration applies to application-to-person traffic, and unregistered numbers get filtered by carriers. Sort that out in Twilio before you plan a campaign around it.

Delivery receipts stay in Twilio too. HubSpot shows you the thread, the direction, the participants, and the files. If you need to see that a specific message hit the handset, that view lives in your Twilio console.

Where this actually pays off

Three patterns come up repeatedly.

Renewals and collections, where somebody has stopped answering email and a text gets read. No-show follow-up, where a two-line message beats a phone call nobody picks up. And handoffs, where a rep wants to introduce themselves on a channel the customer actually checks before a call happens.

None of those work if the rep has to leave HubSpot, find a phone, and then paste the outcome back into a note. The value is that the reaching out and the recording are the same action.

What it won’t do

It isn’t bulk marketing. This is one rep, one contact, one thread, from the record. If you want segmented campaigns with subscription management, that’s HubSpot’s own Marketing SMS add-on, which is a different product with a Marketing Hub requirement attached.

It won’t rescue a contact with no phone number. Matching runs on the E.164 number, so a record without one has nothing to send to.

And it doesn’t extend to Telegram. If a customer has only ever spoken to you on Telegram and you need to reach them cold, SMS is the channel that can do it, assuming you have the number and the consent.

The Twilio SMS integration page covers the card, the matching, and the pricing, and the activation guide walks through connecting a number.
